I thought dresses at awards shows were typically loaners from top designers? (possibly free because they serve as brand marketing and it's not like the celebrity in question would wear them again in public)

Too busy paying my student loan bill right now to decide how cynical I want to bedda1996a wrote: ↑Mon Sep 23, 2019 1:57 pmFirst of all, that dress she is wearing is probably worth more than what I make in a year, but her actual wording come off a bit different. She is speaking specifically about pay disparity and how winning awards doesn't equal actual money. Which makes sense I guess. Depends how cynical you want to be

This year's honorary Oscars go to David Lynch, Lina Wertmuller, and Wes Studi. Geena Davis will get the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

For the first time, all Academy members will be able to vote for the Foreign Film noms once the shortlist of ten is released. All shortlisted films we be able to be streamed by members before voting

Re: Awards Season 2019
There’s a lot of people being really disingenuous on Twitter right now because the Nigerian film Lionheart was rightly disqualified from the Best Foreign/International Picture award for being predominantly English language. There’s a few smart people who’ve previously eloquently championed civil rights causes who are making themselves look foolish by somehow trying to make this an issue of white people holding blacks down. You’d think this was the only predominantly English-language film ever from outside the West.

It wasn’t even disqualified, it was never eligible. It’s like complaining that Marriage Story isn’t eligible for Best Animated Feature

Yup, but Nigeria did submit it though, right?domino harvey wrote:It wasn’t even disqualified, it was never eligible. It’s like complaining that Marriage Story isn’t eligible for Best Animated Feature

If they did, it’s on them for not knowing the rules. Buuuuuut this whole kerfuffle sure sounds like someone’s press agent deserves a raise for bringing a movie no one was going to ever hear of to the forefront of conversation, so it’s possible they did know what they were doing

Re: Awards Season 2019
There's a certain irony in the fact that this is the first time the country has ever submitted a film for this award, despite having one of the largest film industries in the world and having had no shortage of eligible films that could have been submitted over the years.domino harvey wrote: ↑Tue Nov 05, 2019 2:18 pmIf they did, it’s on them for not knowing the rules. Re: Awards Season 2019
There is all of one overlap between Best Feature and Best Director... how can any awards show justify that? These award noms are always so out there...

The idea of A Hidden Life getting nominated but Malick not getting a director nomination is so funny - he's the only piece of the puzzle that would put butts in the seats for that film. Very good to see the recognition for Luce in director and actor, though

Re: Awards Season 2019
The working theory at the "This Had Oscar Buzz" podcast is that televised award shows increase their ratings by attracting stars. This list doesn't support that, although it does impart a message of diversity. I would imagine the Venn for that message and fans of Indie Spirit is close to a circle.

This list is ridiculous, with Clemency, easily the most apathetically-received film at the festival I went to, getting some top nods while something like Waves gets one (though I do love that they chose to nominate Russell over any of the more expected perfs). Seeing Greener Grass up for screenplay is a silly but welcome surprise, and I'm glad Shia LaBeouf got some early recognition for Honey Boy. Hopefully this snowballs into 2020.

The total absence of any acting noms at all for Marriage Story seems odd... does the fact that it's getting the Altman Award preclude it from competing in the other categories?

Yes, getting the ensemble award means no individual perfs can be nominatedianthemovie wrote: ↑Thu Nov 21, 2019 6:46 pmThe total absence of any acting noms at all for Marriage Story seems odd... does the fact that it's getting the Altman Award preclude it from competing in the other categories?

Re: Awards Season 2019
I'm not much of an awards fan, but the lack of ISA nominations for The Last Black Man in San Francisco is weird. Only 3? I thought that movie was pretty good, deserving of a BP and screenplay nom. Guess I need to check out the other nominees. Marriage Story and The Farewell are on my watchlist (though I don't have high expectations for one of them). At least Midsommar didn't get many.

It was nominated for best first feature which has no overlap with the best picture category but seems to be roughly equivalent. Issues with that system aside, it clearly made its mark on this list, with the fourth most noms.

Roughly equivalent?
Best First Feature almost sounds a little condescending. There's no overlap with the Best Film category. Is that always the case? I don't know the ISAs rules, but I hope titles in the Best First Film category aren't disallowed from the main category. Obviously that shouldn't matter. And I didn't realize three nominations for The Last Black Man in SF was enough to be the 4th most nominated title. But one of those nominations doesn't count. Someone to Watch Award? What the heck does that even mean?

Re: Awards Season 2019
I see how one could easily have problems with the system which is why I mentioned it in my post, but that doesn’t change the fact that the nominations reflect appreciation for the film.
