Highly entertaining comedy, and a lot more stylish that one would have expected.

This premiered last night on HBO, in widescreen.
Seems like an interesting cinemascope title treatment is the key way to prevent HBO from fucking with your film

HBO has been showing a lot more OAR 'Scope films over the last year or two, though still not with the same frequency as Epix (which I think is the most consistent of the premium outfits when it comes to this, unless you count HDNet Movies and MGM HD which operate in a somewhat different space).

Among the premium channels, Showtime has been very consistent when it comes to this. Unfortunately they've not had any exclusive deals with the major studios as far as recent films in a long time.

I think what is happening with HBO is that they realize platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime have been showing stuff in their OAR since always, and so is Hulu. The old "black bar" argument isn't working as much anymore either, since TV's are getting bigger and better. Even their original programming has been experimenting with aspect ratios, like Westworld did this past season. I saw a bit of an ad this morning for a British comedy they're importing that looks like it's all in 2.35:1/2.39:1 as well.

As for movies, they've had Fox titles in original OAR since Gone Girl I believe. I'm very encouraged that films like this, Blade Runner 2049 and Dunkirk are being shown in the wider formats too as they're all Warner films, since HBO is within that umbrella themselves.

HBO shows everything licensed cropped to 1.78:1 unless they are specifically contractually obligated to do otherwise. Their internal policy hasn’t changed, filmmakers and studios have just been more savvy and protective when signing contracts.

Who watches movies on HBO in 2018 when you can just buy the Blu-Ray for less than twenty bucks?

HBO is 15 bucks a month. Movies I haven't seen before and decent programming are a better deal overall. I rarely buy Blu-rays anymore unless it's music or Criterion's B&N sales or it's a movie I know I love already. I'm not crazy about buying streaming video, unless it's not on DVD or if it's a show I watched before I cut the cord and don't have access to that channel so easily anymore.
