And would make a great blu double with Lumiere d'été equally restored but not out on blu anywhere.
I really can't understand the reticence with Gremillon both in France and Anglophone territories. He has had two major retrospectives at Edinburgh and London film festivals, seasons in NY ,a major collection of essays in a recent Cahiers du Cinema issue and other than a few Gaumont a la demande and the Eclipse set there is relatively nothing.

The 1st set is purely packing already-available stuff together, no exclusivity whatsoever. I'm not sure for the other 2, but I think it's the same (the 2nd set surely looks like it has no exclusitivy too).

I'm pretty sure the L'Herbier twofer did not have English subs, but the Bernard set did so probably a mixed bag.EddieLarkin wrote:tenia, do you know if everything that makes up the first set had English subs?

Re: Gaumont French Releases
I haven't seen any specs yet regarding the subs, but as sinemadelisikiz wrote, it could be a mixed bag (such are currently the BD releases of Gaumont, where some have Eng subs and others don't). I just asked Jerome Soulet on DVD Classik where he is quite active, I'll post here the answer if/when I get one.EddieLarkin wrote:tenia, do you know if everything that makes up the first set had English subs?

Re: Gaumont French Releases
The original two Gaumont sets titled Le Cinema Premier (6 discs each) have no subs. Most of the listed shorts, and a few features, derive from these. As far as I'm aware, only the Bernard features have subs - the original issue of Renoir's Le bled has none.

I'm going to assume this is a typo and the Atlantic City is from 1980, which I would be really excited about. Hopefully, a possible blu ray release in the states.DVDClassiK wrote:Début décembre 2015 (sus réserve car peuvent basculer en janvier 2016): 2 titres GC

Re: Gaumont French Releases
OK, so for the 120th anniversary boxsets, Gaumont will be using the existing DVDs so if there weren't Eng subs to being with, there still won't be any.
In the 2nd and 3rd sets, there are a couple of exclusivities but they won't last (usually they will last only a couple of weeks).

Any suggestion that Zazie will be a new transfer? The Criterion is old and lacking, and I'm fairly sure in the wrong ratio (though I think more due to being cropped at the sides as opposed to being open matte).

Zazie reviewed at Blu-ray.com. Despite a clearly more recent scan, The reviewer gave it only 3.5 out of 5 for PQ. He even went on to call the old Criterion transfer "unquestionably superior".

Re: Gaumont French Releases
As strange as it may sound, the Criterion transfer has a lot more detail. In darker sequences there is a massive amount of detail that is wiped out on the Gaumont transfer, which isn't surprising at this point as many of their catalog transfers are filtered across the board. The filtering has also affected the dynamic range as well as various color tonalities. You can see how drastic the discrepancy can be here:
1. Gaumont (New transfer)
