Re: AnimEigo
Has there been the remotest news on a follow-up Tora-San set? Like many here, the initial box was love-at-first-sight for me and I'm wondering if the first set had substantial enough returns to make a second commercially viable. The AnimEigo site is frugal with updates.

There hasn't been any solid news released. Generally they are real slow with releases though, so that may be part of it.

If, like me, you think more Misumi and Wakayama is always a good thing, you should be delighted to hear that their 1963 film Shinsengumi Chronicles will be released by Animeigo on 9 Nov (according to Amazon US).

I love Misumi, and I also hope they continue with the Shinobi No Mono series.

I am disappointed that Netflix doesn't have the recent samurai films from Animeigo. I'm going to add as many other Animeiogo titles to my Netflix queue as I can. Maybe they will take the hint.

Two of the films in the second Sleepy Eyes set directed by Kenji Misumi - think I'll have to get this one..

What's the name of the director mentioned in the commentary on Tora-san? If he inspired such a genius work he has to be at least worth a look.

Re: AnimEigo
For those, who are no longer willing to wait on Animeigo to perhaps release another Tora-san set sometime down the line, DDDhouse offer most (or all?) titles individually i9n their Yoji Yamada section.

These are the (mostly) ghastly-looking Panorama releases. Shochiku did not make good materials available because it was working on its upcoming (far more expensive) remastered set.Finch wrote:For those, who are no longer willing to wait on Animeigo to perhaps release another Tora-san set sometime down the line, DDDhouse offer most (or all?) titles individually i9n their Yoji Yamada section.

Still a great deal on the Miyamoto box at 49.99. I picked that and Lady Snowblood up today for 57.98 shipped. You get an automatic 5 bucks off plus free shipping if you order over 50 bucks.

Re: AnimEigo
Can anyone tell me about the Shinobi No Mono movies. Animeigo has the box set for 34.99. Does it have cool ninja stuff? I've heard the plots are really convoluted.

Re: AnimEigo
Just to let everyone know, it looks like AnimEigo is going to release the Clone Returns Home this summer. Haven't seen it, but have only great things about it.
Oldsheperd, the first three Shinobi No Mono films are great. They are connected and consider them like one really long film.
The only problem is that the fourth film starts a new story. New characters take over the story, but played by the same main actor of the first three films. The film itself is great, but it has a to be continued time of ending and as of right now AnimEigo hasn't released the fifth film which starts right where the fourth one ends. Still, the boxset is worth it just for the first three films alone.

I highly recommend Imai's Revenge (written by Hashimoto) which came out earlier this year. Gorgeous black and white 'scope, looks much better than the average Toei product, and is one of my favorite samurai films.

Re: AnimEigo
I missed this release -- but agree that this is one of Imai's best "late" films. It covers the same sort of ground as Kobayashi's Harakiri and Samurai Rebellion and lacks the really first tier stars available to Kobayashi at Toho -- yet I actually prefer this to the more acclaimed Kobayashi films.Steven H wrote:I highly recommend Imai's Revenge (written by Hashimoto) which came out earlier this year. Are the films in the Mifune set any fun? Apparently they're having a summer sale for the boxset and the two Lady Snowblood films this month. Additionally if you get all of them you get $5 off.

In all likelihood I'll buy Kon Ichikawa's 47 Ronin, but are Incident at Blood Pass, Shinsengumi and Dora-Heita any good?

Incident at Blood Pass is pretty good and a nice closing for the Yojimbo character, but it's not a great film.

Dora-Heita is decent too, although it has a terrible score
