Re: The Matrix Trilogy (The Wachowskis, 1999-2003)
It strikes me that the best way to spin this Matrix reboot would be as a 'Fire Walks With Me'-style prequel showing one of the previous 'failed' Neos going through the inevitable cycle of death and return to the Matrix. You could probably mine that for a lot of pathos and ideas of moving towards a pre-ordained tragic fate for that Neo and their band of humans. (Especially in a post Rogue One world!)

Re: The Matrix Trilogy (The Wachowskis, 1999-2003)
One of the more frustrating aspects of proposed prequel/reboot thing planned for The Matrix franchise is how, inevitably, it will end up being not as smart or original as the Wachowskis' version. Mind you, the original wasn't mind-blowingly intellectual or anything. But it was smarter than your average actioner. I appreciated that elements of Nietzsche's "On Truth and Lying in a Non-Moral Sense" could be found in Cypher's character and his desire to remain ignorantly blissful. I appreciated that it was trying.
Whoever writes the new version is probably not going to be as interested in thoughtful associations between science-fiction and philosophy; rather, they will be writer hired to develop the intellectual property. It will be the result of trying to continue/revalidate a successful franchise, not the result of trying to create something innovative (in many ways, this was the problem with Reloaded and Revolutions as well).
Of course, I could be wrong, and the new screenwriter(s) might incorporate some nuggets of philosophy that will make the new film talked about for years to come. But I have a feeling that the eventual film will be rooted in regurgitating the franchise and its commercial possibilities, as opposed to anything that makes the viewer think.

Oh, this totally makes sense to me - the gross action movie masses love Reeves as John Wick, and he retains an large amount of cred among nerdier sci-fi fans from his Matrix days (if you don't believe me, just look at the popular online reaction to his appearance in the upcoming videogame Cyberpunk 2077). Yeah he's kind of a meme, but he's a meme people like, and doing this now nets both of these audiences for sure.

I still haven't seen the third one.
I haven't seen the first one in 15 years, but have heard recently it hasn't aged well.

I rewatched them a year or so ago and they're pretty good, but the best thing to come from them is still that one episode of Kids Next Door.

It's way broader than that. He's popular everywhere with people my age. Go anywhere and people my age will tell you how much they love Keanu. And thankfully it's because he's a good guy.domino harvey wrote: ↑Tue Aug 20, 2019 5:25 pmHe’s some kind of patroned saint on Reddit, he’s def a meme at this point but he also does seem like a good guy so better him than Reddit’s other personality bolstering achievement President Trump

I suppose that the "Sad Keanu" meme played its part too!Big Ben wrote: ↑Tue Aug 20, 2019 5:47 pmIt's way broader than that. He's popular everywhere with people my age. Haven't watched the sequels in forever, but I remember finding the first film's ideas and gun-fu action to be sorely undermined by it's insistence on cliched Hollywood stereotypes and narrative beats. It's still a good movie, but it was harder for me to take all the "kissing to save someone" and the whole "The One" seriously now.black&huge wrote: ↑Tue Aug 20, 2019 7:59 pmNews to me. I think the first one is one of the most well aged films, generally speaking and especially from the late 90's.
I should probably rewatch the sequels, but if there was a series that didn't need a fourth movie, it would be basically every fourth sequel recently made, so this isn't really surprising (Toy Story 4 just broke into the billion club, are we still surprised these get announced? See also the new Bill & Ted)

I was worried it was going to be another fan service reach around, but it looks sufficiently ambitious. I like that they’re cooling down on the mythology and seemingly going back to a coherent story, with Neo being reinserted back into the matrix or reborn into it?
