IT’S NOT OVER YET.

How do you follow up a film as iconic as Joe Dante’s seminal werewolf epic The Howling? With a star turn from horror legend Christopher Lee and a leather-clad Sybil Danning (The Red Queen Kills Seven Times), Howling II is more than up to the challenge!

After a young woman dies in violent circumstances, her brother is approached by a stranger (Lee) who reveals that she was in fact a werewolf. The brother’s initial skepticism is quickly diffused when he encounters the fanged beasts first-hand. Now the pair, joined by a plucky journalist, must travel to Transylvania to destroy werewolf queen Stirba (Danning), and rid the world of lycanthropes once and for all.

Helmed by director Philippe Mora (Mad Dog Morgan, The Beast Within), who would go on to direct the equally barmy follow-up Howling III: The Marsupials, Howling II is a campy horror extravaganza featuring killer dwarves, werewolf orgies and ‘80s punk rock galore!

I really don't care for this movie, but some part of me hopes the reverse cover art has the amusing "Stirba Werewolf Bitch" subtitle.

For anyone not in the know, this is also the film that featured the notorious end credits punk performance that obsessively, and hilariously, repeats the tiny amount of Sybil Danning nudity from the main feature to the rhythm of the tune! (NSFW and spoilers for the way that the end credits highlight the couple of stand out moments from the film!)

The Howling series has to be one of the weirdest and least connected ones. The first film is great, but this second one is a very strange beast. Then there's Howling III: The Marsupials, which is a very strange Australian-set inter-racial love metaphor(?!?), which feels part of that mid-80s period of infatuation with all things Australian (as the Simpsons once put it, with a dig at "Crocodile" Dundee and Yahoo Serious!), as much as in the early 80s trend of great Australian horrors such as Razorback and Road Games. Then they all started to go straight to video.

Though I think my favourite of all of the sequels has to be Howling VI: The Freaks, which involves the amnesiac werewolf hero getting caught up with a carnival freak show(! Yes, there is a little Tod Browning influence here in the tour of the sympathetic members of the troupe) that is run by vampires (?!), which involves a kind of class-warfare thing and inevitable final showdown. Its silly but fun stuff, and just this one entry puts the werewolf vs vampire battles in the recent limp Twilight and Underworld series to shame!
