Night of the Comet

IT WAS THE LAST THING ON EARTH THEY EVER EXPECTED.

Life can be tough when you’re a Valley girl. First, there’s making sure you’re on time for pep squad practice. Then there’s having to live under the same roof as your bitchy stepmother who, you suspect, is making it with Chuck from across the road. And then, of course, there’s having to keep on the lookout for the occasional marauding zombie hungering after your flesh!

Eighteen year-old Reggie (Catherine Mary Stewart – Weekend at Bernie’s, The Last Starfighter) misses out on the event-of-a-lifetime when she ditches watching the comet in favour of copping off with the projectionist at the cinema where she works. But this turns out to be a wise move when, the next day, she discovers that the entire population has been reduced to piles of red dust – leaving only Reggie, her sister Sam (Kelli Maroney – Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Chopping Mall) and a handful of other survivors to fend off the roving gangs of glassy-eyed zombies.

Taking its cue from classic “doomsday” movies such as The Day of the Triffids and The Omega Man (and with a healthy dose of Dawn of the Dead thrown in for good measure), Night of the Comet is an irresistible slice of Reagan-era B-movie fare which features Cyndi Lauper dance-alongs as well as some truly gravity-defying bouffant hairstyles… Well, it was acceptable in the 80s!

Picked this film up in the recent sale and while fun, it really seemed to lack explanation. The premise was great, as was the idea of having a woman-centric group of good guys. The special effects and sets were great, and the movie didn't seem to fall into cliches (based on the limited experience I have with such films.)
SpoilerShow
On the other hand some of the plot holes left me a bit empty at the end of the film. Why exactly did a comet have such powers that everyone but a few survivors died? Just who and what are these underground scientists? Did they know what the comet would do?
A fun film that I just wish was explained a little bit more!

Fans of the film may be interested in this Kickstarter for a vinyl (and optional tape!) version of the soundtrack which will be finishing shortly and is currently short of its goal.

In what world does it cost three thousand dollars to press limited edition vinyl?

Cover of LP not exactly representative of film or score.

The film and music is closer to things like this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8NPsoL1fGyY" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Just about to do the same (500 copies, about the lowest number you can sensibly order), and without sleeve printing, it runs about $1500. Lacquers alone will be $200 a side.

Yes, this world! :P In addition to the already steep costs, I'm sure the huge increase in demand for vinyl in recent years and shortage of pressing plants (which often causes delays for small labels as their products are bumped back in pressing queues in favor of major labels doing the latest Pink Floyd re-issue or whatever) has not helped to lower costs.
