Reading through the thread for Tony Kaye's latest film inspired me to put up links to a couple of his adverts.

Here's his Volvo ad, which seemed to be inescapable on UK television for a period of a year or two!

And then there is this distressing don't drink and drive advert. However I found it unintentionally funny as it kept reminding me of this classic clip from Channel 4's Exploitica series!

So.... yes. It is JUST a commercial. Not as clever as the Fed-Ex commercial, but still amusing.

I love it. Some of the best Hitchcock pastiche I've ever seen, and beautifully shot by Harris Savides.

The indispensible DVDs in this realm are Kings of Ads V1 and V2. I believe Shocking Videos still sells them at revengeismydestiny.com. (I'm not affiliated in any way) They are literally composed of hours of auteur commercials and the best thing is that each commercial is menu indexed. Of course there are also political commercials directed by auteurs as well, from Oliver Stone to a rumored George Romero that I haven't seen. I also find it interesting that given all the directors who have made commercials, that Spielberg, that bastion of commercialism has never ventured into this territory.

He's more devious, he just puts the ads right into the movies. The Terminal is pretty much a long ad for Burger King, Starbucks, Borders, and United Airlines starring Tom Hanks.

Well, the United Airlines ad placement didn't seem all that contrived considering the subject matter and the Borders ad placement makes some thematic sense considering the protagonist's plight. There is much less justification for the others, aside from the fact that there probably are Burger Kings in some airports and that you can't escape Starbucks if you live in a major metropolitan area. Also, the movie is terrible.
