Cyrano De Bergerac (Blu-ray)
Directed by Jean-Paul Rappeneau

Cyrano (Gerard Depardieu), a swashbuckling hero with a gift for verse and a prominent proboscis - is madly in love with the most beautiful woman in Paris. Deterred though by his feelings of physical inadequacy he instead uses poetic skills to support another hapless suitor. But will the object of their affection realise who she's really falling for?

Humorous and touching in equal measure, Cyrano de Bergerac is a spectacular and vibrant adaptation of Edmond Rostand's classic novel. Depardieu has never been better than as the swaggering scribe, his performance enriched by the vigorous direction of Jean-Paul Rappeneau and lavish period design.

Now celebrating its 30th anniversary, this acclaimed world cinema classic is now available on Blu-ray in the UK for the very first time.

Great news. Surprised this wasn’t one of KL’s numerous MGM acquisitions

Hopefully this reproduces the rhyming couplet English subtitles that were created by Anthony Burgess for the film!

I don't think Burgess had any direct involvement with the film: an anonymous subtitler reworked an existing translation. But given that they're so iconic, it would be a surprise if they used anything else.

I seem to remember Burgess getting an onscreen credit for the subtitles -- anyway, a quick google search confirmed the subtitles being his work, taken probably from his own translation of Rostand's play.

The BFI's Phil Roberts has said on Facebook that this will have the Burgess translation, which is excellent news.

Burgess did get a credit in the subtitles (not "onscreen" as part of the original film, as it would have been meaningless outside English-speaking territories), but my point was that the subtitles were reworked from his existing translation - he didn't actually sit down and devise the timings himself.

Cyrano de Bergerac, starring Gérard Depardieu as Cyrano, is a spectacular and vibrant adaptation of Edmond Rostand’s classic play, funny and touching in equal measure, and featuring English subtitles by author Anthony Burgess (A Clockwork Orange). Amid the lavish period design, Depardieu has never been better than as the swaggering scribe, delivering verve and pathos under Jean-Paul Rappeneau’s vigorous direction.

Cyrano (Gérard Depardieu), a swashbuckling hero with a gift for verse, is in love with the beautiful Roxane (Anne Brochet) but fears his prominent nose would cause her to reject his romantic advances. But will the object of their affection realise who she’s really falling for?
