I don't want to get my hopes up because unlike King Lear, a NEWER 4K restoration of Alphaville had premiered at MoMA last year (late April) then shown at IFC, so the likelihood of a UHD was much greater once we knew an updated 4K digital master that had yet to see physical release existed.

Prove me wrong KL, please prove me wrong. (And please don't fuck it up if you do.)

Yeah, as much as I love Godard I'd rather get blu-ray releases of all his key films, seemingly trapped in purgatory, before the UHD push for already-stellar releases. But I'm happy about it, and as long as they're pushing out 4Ks at a certain pace, I'll certainly take it over shlock like Death Wish and Indecent Proposal!

This is kind of how I feel about most of the pre-70s film canon beyond the obvious “begging for UHD” titles like North by Northwest and perhaps something like The Leopard. Quite honestly, I love Godard, but I really don’t need most of his films in UHD, although Pierrot Le Fou could certainly use a newer master.

On a side note, Kino’s Alphaville release doesn’t have a street date yet. It just says late 2024, so I imagine StudioCanal will do a 4K at around the same time but just haven’t announced it yet. I do think the UHD push for a lot of classic films that aren’t exactly “visual spectacles”, such as Alphaville, is starting to reach “overkill” levels if I’m being perfectly honest. It’s like “we’ve already had stellar and not cheap boutique releases of so many of these titles over the last 12-15 years. Just chill.”

That said, Last Year at Marienbad probably wouldn’t look bad in UHD.

UHD is obviously a no brainer for stuff like Blue Velvet and Days of Heaven.
