^ Thanks. If this is the first 4k transfer, then it'll be easier buying this film for the fourth time.

Re: 1003 All About Eve
Does this release mean anything substantial in terms of upcoming releases with Fox/Disney?

The extras look incredibly impressive, a two disc bluray like On the Waterfront. My last time buying this was the fox studio classics dvd BP box set, which makes me think Sunrise is plausible to be on deck.

It's really a shame they couldn't get Molly Haskell to record something for this. Or Farran Smith Nehme. Or Sheila O'Malley. Or...

You could play this game based on who’s on screen too— why not a new extra exploring the career of George Sanders? Or Anne Baxter? Or Celeste Holm? Or Thelma Ritter? Criterion has never been super comfortable or well-versed with the actual star system of Hollywood, often falling back on either Auteurist extras or focus on the primary star only

Looks like a great package.

Re: 1003 All About Eve
Quite unimaginative extras for the Mankiewicz. So for new/newish stuff: two previously-not-on-dvd (as far as i know) TV interviews, an interview with Larry McQueen, and a Mankiewicz docu that's already shown up on other releases, perhaps not of this film tho. There are roughly five billion French Mankiewicz experts who haven't shown up on dvds of his films much, and they could explore, or just have fun with!, the gay/camp angle more exclusively with more than just an old and poorly-reviewed commentary by Sam Staggs. There, that's like 3 new extras already!!!

I am fairly sure the previous Fox blu ray was from a 4k restoration

For what it's worth, the clip on the page doesn't look that different from the previous Fox Blu-ray.

Re: 1003 All About Eve
When did 4K transfers become common? The Fox Blu-ray is dated 2010. I'm holding it in my hand and it says "4K" nowhere inside or out

Re: 1003 All About Eve
The first 4k classic screening I saw was wizard of oz at the Samuel Goldwyn in August 2009, iirc, and they were playing around with workflow then, I think they said they scanned at 6k, worked resolution independent with 2k files then finished the conform back to high res to 4k.swo17 wrote:When did 4K transfers become common? It was a bare trickle for the next four or five years after that, most facilities were still experimenting with it and developing workflows standards and best practices, or seeing no point since they didn’t have adequate 4k monitors that could display the resolution in playback.
In the last four to five years everything flipped at a certain point to being pretty much all 4k
Like how up til about 2006 a ton of tv was still standard def, then it suddenly flipped and literally every show (no matter how little the production or channel) was HD.

Not to mention that if it were 4K, I should think they would have touted that somewhere in the specs

I could be wrong but I am fairly sure I read it somewhere (will try to find a link). Sony was doing 4k restorations before 2010 too.

Sony was heavily involved in inventing and promulgating the professional tech, so it wasn’t a huge problem for them machinery wise.nitin wrote:I could be wrong but I am fairly sure I read it somewhere (will try to find a link). Sony was doing 4k restorations before 2010 too.
There’s a durable goods aspect to all this, and the economics of continually extracting value from fully depreciated (2k, hd) assets before upgrading.
facilities didn’t just replace scanners, displays, computers, instantly, they upgrade because the equipment needs replacing or they’re losing clients to upgrades competitors, or their clients need the new tech.
And even the big places like wb, there are only so many hours their first new scanner can be running, only a couple fancy suites with the latest and greatest, it takes a lot of time for all that to trickle out to be more universal.

Re: 1003 All About Eve
I understand all of that but it is notable that Criterion themselves are not describing this as a “new” 4k restoration when their usual practice, including for this month’s other releases, is to state that where it is at least a new restoration for the US/Canada.
Also, FWIW, pro-b has said that it’s the same 4k restoration in the br.com comments for the news about this month’s releases. I will, however, try to find the source I had previously read on this point.

I also don’t believe the 2010 Fox edition was a 4k remaster. It wasn’t until 3 or 4 years ago that Fox started to upgrade their catalogue to 4k. Plus, Beaver and bluray.com reviews for that edition don’t mention anything about a 4k restoration.
If you look at the clip on the All About Eve page it doesn’t look like that old edition at all.

Re: 1003 All About Eve
AFAIK, Dr Strangelove is the first ever movie restored in 4K and that was by Cineric in 2006. It certainly wasn't common then, nor in 2010. I'd guess 4k resto workflow became more common around 2013-2014.

Ok I have not been able to find the source that I was thinking of that mentioned the Fox blu being from a 4k restoration, there are a few posts on br.com that say the same but no one has been able to post a link to where they got that info from.
So wait and see I guess when Criterion’s blu is released.

Strange, someone on the bluray forum said that Snow White was the first film to ever be restored in 4K back in 1993.
