Listening to some Thelonious Monk comps, I heard a striking similarity between his & Sonny Rollins' wonderful version of "The Way You Look Tonight" and the chorus of Les demoiselles de Rochefort's "Chanson des jumelles"

Delightful interview with the wonderfully chipper Grover Dale about his experience working on The Young Girls of Rochefort.

I recently watched the two non-box set movies Criterion is streaming ( The Pied Piper was brilliant while A Slightly Pregnant Man only has its English title going for it). I was curious though why there’s such a massive gap between them and Demy’s next film, Lady Oscar?

It sounds like it was a matter of funding. Here's the brief overview provided in the French Film Directors book on Demy:knives wrote: ↑Fri Mar 24, 2023 11:17 amI recently watched the two non-box set movies Criterion is streaming ( The Pied Piper was brilliant while A Slightly Pregnant Man only has its English title going for it). Recall also that he had planned to begin Une chambre en ville in 1976 with Catherine Deneuve and Gérard Depardieu before Deneuve dropped out over creative differences.Darren Waldron wrote:The 1970s were characterised by an inability to find French producers willing to support his projects, which led him to accept commissions from abroad (The Pied Piper and Lady Oscar) and an adaptation for the television (La Naissance du jour).

That’s a bummer and shocking. He seems one of the marketable directors of the period and seems to have mastered making films that look expensive cheaply.

I've been trying to compile a list of best sources for Jacques Demy, and here's what I got so far.
The Umbrellas of Cherbourg: CC more robust than SC according to http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film4/blu-ray_ ... lu-ray.htm. No information about FR Arte Video
The Young Girls of Rochefort: Arte Video better than CC encoding, colors look a bit more lifelike (especially in 8th cap) https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?d1=7958&d2=7959&c=3233
Lola: terrible DNR from master for all releases
Bay of Angels: Only in Criterion
Une Chambre en Ville: Only in Criterion
Donkey Skin: Only in Criterion, no information on FR Arte quality
--- Below are not included in the Criterion set ---
Model Shop: BD available no information on comparison. UK Arrow vs US Twilight OOP (abundant on ebay for $50)
Three Seats for the 26th: FR Pathe has BD with EN subtitles
Lady Oscar: only JP BD https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=334691
